Disability Pride Month
The Disability Pride Flag, originally designed by Ann Magill in 2019, was developed to represent the diversity of all disabilities. In 2021, the flag underwent revisions based on input from the community and is now freely available for public use.
The flag consists of different colored stripes, each carrying a specific significance:
– Red: Represents physical disabilities.
– Gold: Symbolizes neurodiversity.
– White: Stands for invisible disabilities and those not yet diagnosed.
– Blue: Represents emotional and psychiatric disabilities, encompassing mental illness, anxiety, and depression.
– Green: Signifies sensory disabilities, including deafness, blindness, lack of smell or taste, audio processing disorder, and all other sensory-related disabilities.
The faded black background serves as a symbol of mourning and anger towards the victims of ableist violence and abuse. Additionally, the diagonal band crossing the flag signifies breaking down the walls and barriers that segregate disabled individuals from mainstream society. It also represents hope, light, and creativity breaking through the darkness of discrimination.
