What is dignity of risk?
We have the right to make mistakes, it’s how we learn to do better the next time.
“If we eliminate all risk from a young person’s life, we also eliminate the very experiences that teach them who they are, what they are capable of, and how to navigate the world.”
Adapted from Robert Perske, originator of the Dignity of Risk concept (1972)
What dignity of risk means
Dignity of risk means having the chance to take reasonable risks, make choices, and learn from mistakes. A reasonable risk is something you think through and prepare for. You can get support and still be the person making the choice.
Ask for the support you want
Try saying: “I want to try this. Can we make a plan together?”
Tell your family, teacher, or support person what you want to do and what help would be useful. Asking for help is part of independence.
You can also pause or decide an activity is not for you.
YOUR CHALLENGE THIS MONTH
Choose one small step toward something you want to do.
Think about:
- What do I want to try, and why?
- What could go wrong, and how can I prepare?
- What support do I want, and who can I ask for help?
Afterward, ask yourself:
What worked?
What would I change next time?
WHAT COULD YOU TRY?
Going somewhere new. Practice a bus route with someone you trust. Make a plan for what to do if you miss your stop.
Exploring work. Apply for a job or try volunteering. Ask for help practicing an interview or learning a new task.
Speaking up at appointments. Choose a question to ask your doctor. Use speech, writing, pictures, or your communication device.
Building Relationships. Spend time with people you like. Talk about respect, boundaries, and consent. You can say no or change your mind.

Piensa:
- ¿Qué quiero intentar y por qué?
- ¿Qué podría salir mal y cómo puedo prepararme?
- ¿Qué apoyo quiero y a quién puedo pedir ayuda?
