TRANSPORTATION
TRANSPORTATION TIPS BY AGE
Ages 10–13:
• Practice asking for directions – “How do I find the library?” etc.
• Memorize your home address, or keep it in the notes of your phone or cover of your planner
• Practice safety while walking, riding bikes, or traveling with others
Ages 14–16:
• If applicable, start studying and preparing to take your driver’s permit test, and get as much driving practice as possible
• Contact your local center for independent living and ask what driver’s training resources they have (driving simulators, referrals to driver’s training programs for individuals with disabilities)
• Get your driver’s license, if applicable
• Start saving to purchase your own transportation (bike, car, etc.) as applicable
• Learn about public transportation options in your area and practice reading bus schedules and maps. You can ask centers for independent living for resources, or search online.
Ages 17–18:
• Plan your own transportation for events and put it in your daily planner, either in paper or on your phone
• Learn about vehicle care and maintenance as applicable
Ages 19–21:
• Make and implement a plan to become as self-sufficient as possible with transportation, including transportation to jobs and social events

CONSEJOS DE TRANSPORTE
POR EDAD
Edades 10–13:
• Practica pedir direcciones: “¿Cómo llego a la biblioteca?”, etc.
• Memoriza la dirección de tu casa, o guárdala en las notas de tu teléfono o en la portada de tu agenda.
• Practica la seguridad al caminar, andar en bicicleta o viajar con otras personas.
Edades 14–16:
• Si corresponde, comienza a estudiar y prepararte para tomar el examen del permiso de conducir, y ¡obtén toda la práctica de manejo posible!
• Comunícate con tu centro local de vida independiente y pregunta qué recursos de capacitación para conducir tienen (simuladores de manejo, referencias a programas de entrenamiento para conductores con discapacidades).
• Obtén tu licencia de conducir, si corresponde.
• Empieza a ahorrar para comprar tu propio medio de transporte (bicicleta, automóvil, etc.), según corresponda.
• Infórmate sobre las opciones de transporte público en tu área y practica leer horarios de autobuses y mapas. Puedes pedir recursos en los centros de vida independiente o buscar en línea.
Edades 17–18:
• Planifica tu propio transporte para eventos y anótalo en tu agenda diaria, ya sea en papel o en tu teléfono.
• Aprende sobre el cuidado y mantenimiento del vehículo, según corresponda.
Edades 19–21:
• Elabora e implementa un plan para ser lo más autosuficiente posible con el transporte, incluyendo el transporte al trabajo y a eventos sociales.
